True story: I was in a game where the Rules of Cool and Funny overrode all others. Somehow our journey led to a sea captain who would grant us passage if one of us would give him a hand with his passage.

I say ‘with’ somewhat inaccurately. ‘In’ is more like it. The captain wanted a damn good fisting, and our conflict was about which one of us was going to…take the plunge. One thing I will never understand is how people from my parents generation unto the newest can take anything as set in stone, forever unchanging and absolute gospel.

In the space of less than a hundred years we have gone from horse-drawn carriages to walking on the moon. We have dispelled myths and found new knowledge. We have destroyed old demons, created new ones and then destroyed them anew in the space of a single breath. We have uncovered the fundamental building blocks of the universe itself, harnessed the power of the sun and eradicated diseases that once slaughtered mankind. Regimes have risen.
